Fall 2009 looks: Thigh High Boots

  • Aug. 4th, 2009 at 11:01 PM

About a month or so back it suddenly popped into my head that I wanted a pair of thigh high boots...never mind that I never ever wear boots in Singapore because it's just not practical in our weather and never mind that thigh high boots are typically associated with hookers and very kinky type stuff.

And I wanted the real mid-thigh high type boots..and it had to be fitting and in suede. I looked everywhere in Singapore and I just couldn't find one!! The highest pair which I found was a pair from Aldo which are just slightly covering my knees. They weren't IT but I bought them anyway because they were on sale and they were the closest I could find.

But I still was not satisfied!! And then an update from Who What Wear tells me that thigh high boots are a Fall trend! ARGH...now I want them even more. I'm not really a crazy trend follower..I mean I keep track of them but I don't pop right out and buy every single new trend that comes along...but now...my desire for my perfect thigh high boots has been rekindled!!!

I've even searched online and I can't find anything really nice and not insanely priced. Sure there are gorgeous gorgeous ones from wonderful designers like this pair from Brian Atwood but I can't pay over S$2000 for a pair of boots I'd hardly get a chance to weaaaaaaar....oh my goodness..and this pair from Christian Louboutin:

Some just kill me now..seriously...stab my eyes out because I seriously COVET man and can die ok??? they're GORGEOUS but they can never be mine...sob....

Trying out a new trend: Harem Pants

  • Jul. 26th, 2009 at 10:52 PM

The Harem Pants is one of those trends that when it first came out left me extremely baffled...I just couldn't understand how it was a good look. Even most of the models who walked the runways in them couldn't make them look good...and if the six feet tall alien but gorgeous looking other species couldn't all pull it off, how in the world could us mere mortals possibly wear pants which made our butts and crotch look like they were reaching our knees??

But like booties...the Harem Pants slowly slowly sneaked it's way into my interest and I started thinking more and more about them so I started doing research. And I concluded from my research the following on how I might be able to wear Harem Pants:

1. Getting the right cut of Harem Pants. Don't get the ones which are totally baggy and drape-y around the crotch and then suddenly  tight around your calves...I still think those look insane.

2. Generally, the top should be fitting. I think it helps balance out the baggy crotch so you don't end up looking just completely stumpy.

3. Wear heels. This is one of those times when you definitely need help to look taller and dress up the pants.

And I found the perfect pair of silk Harem Pants for me at Island Beverly in Hong Kong! The bottom of the pants were not too fitting so it flowed quite nicely from the baggy part and didn't look too jarring.

So this weekend, I gave it a shot and here's the result!

I really liked the look. I thought it was kinda cool. And it looked great with my bandage shoes.

To be honest I have no idea what else I'm going to be able to wear the pants with but I'm still pleased that I managed to put a look together with the pants because I LOVE the pair I have! They were SO comfortable and really really great for the weather we're having these days in Singapore.

A lady with an edge..

  • Jul. 22nd, 2009 at 10:38 AM

Trying out a new combination today with my cute new jacket which I found from this shop in Island Beverly in Hong Kong.

(Jacket from Island Beverly; Skirt from LaRok; Necklace and Chanel No. 5 perfume brooch from Chanel; Shoes from Charles & Keith)

This is my ladylike I-Go-For-Tea-and-shop-in-Harrods side but I gave the outfit a bit of an edge with my new "bandage" shoes!

The shoes were a really great find from our very own Charles and Keith! They really need to be re-soled though..there is like absolutely no cushioning in the shoes for my feet. But I think they look great and they were really affordable so I'm super super pleased!

my pre-loved and much loved Baylene clothes

  • Jul. 20th, 2009 at 10:28 PM

My love affair with Baylene started in 2006 when I just started work and a friend introduced me to the label. I remember having read about Baylene before, by 2006 it was already a huge hit in the Singapore fashion scene and had won the Mercedes-Benz Asia Fashion Award in 2005. We went down to the shop at Stamford House during lunch one day and I was hooked.

I loved the detail, unusual shapes and silhouettes, clean lines and sexy masculinity in the designs.

I would happily troop down to Stamford House several times each every season to pick up the latest arrivals and bug the salesgirl to call me once new designs I liked came in. I started collecting so many of her pieces that it got to a point when I had to consciously NOT wear a Baylene piece to work to avoid ending up wearing something of hers everyday of the week.

And then some time back I received a sms that the Stamford House store was closing!! Devastated...now everytime I drive past Stamford House I look wistfully at the shop space that used to be Baylene...I thought that at least I could still continue my love affair with her through the wonders of the world wide web but just today I went on to her website to find out the online store is temporarily unavailable!! ARGH!! I just pray "temporary" is the operative word here....

Her jackets and dresses are still a staple in my everyday work wear even if I have grown a tad too big for some of her skirts and shirts (I blame age and a sedentary lifestyle!). They're still beautiful and wonderful to me but I have lost hope that I might get my ass into the gym and be able to fit into them again..so I'm selling off these pre-loved and much loved pieces (I only dry clean my Baylene pieces because I follow her instructions to "love my garments"!) and hope someone else will be able to enjoy them!

Trying out a new trend: the Unisex Shoes

  • Jul. 17th, 2009 at 8:09 PM

Took the new shoes out for test "drive" today!

I saw a couple of girls wearing shoes like these in my recent trip to Hong Kong and decided to get a pair for myself. This was during my second day in Hong Kong and their street style was starting to influence my shopping because I also bought a pair of gauchos pants and baggy knitted halter neck vest. On my third day, I wore the gauchos pants with a plain baggy white tee-shirt and wrapped a thin purple zebra printed scarf around my neck in the middle of summer. Not something I would have done in Singapore because I think people would just think I was weird.

As I was saying…so today I took the new shoes out today...

I’m pretty pleased with them (even though if I hadn’t been wearing the leggings, the back of my heels would probably be blistered and/or bleeding by now)…I really like them although they really have the potential to cause a world of pain! I just got to figure out how else to wear them. I was thinking I wouldn’t wear them with pants because I was afraid it would be too manly and clunky…then whatdoyaknow, this entry on Unisex Shoes comes out on WhoWhatWear (a site I recently discovered and have been following religiously)! Yaaaay..idea sia…doesn’t the pair Kate Moss is wearing kinda look like mine??

Authentic Dior Necklace for sale

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 10:38 AM

Price: $80

Shipping Charges:
$3 (for normal mail) and $4.50 (for registered mail)

Payment:
By POSB or UOB bank transfer

Description:
This is a super cute authentic Dior necklace with star charms, a cute little shoe and the Dior logo. The necklace can be worn in 3 different lengths as there are 3 different spots to clasp the necklace. There is even a little "D" which dangles at the end of the necklace.

I don't remember if it's sterling silver, just silver plated or if the crystals are real Swarovski crystals. Sorry..it's been a while since I bought it and I remember being so excited by it because it's just so cute that I probably didn't even bother to ask the salesgirl these things. But it's real Dior so you can trust in the quality.

The necklace will come in the original packaging with the grey felt little baggy and Dior box. I took very good care of the necklace and I always put it back in the original packaging after use. So it's not dirty at all or tarnished.

I bought it at the Dior outlet at Isetan Scotts some time back and I hardly ever wear it anymore and it's such a shame that it's just sitting there so I am letting it go. I bought it during a sale which is why I am selling it for so cheap (not because it's fake!).

How to Buy: Leave me a message if you're interested in the item with your name and email address and I will contact you. Otherwise, you can drop me an email at closetoverfloweth@gmail.com. I will send the item out within 3 working days from receiving payment.
